Stop-Motion Animation Unit Study

$20.00

In this web-based unit study on Stop-motion Animation, students will not only learn how to use stop-motion techniques, but will also learn about broader topics like what makes a good story, good frame composition, and how to use colors effectively.

Description

Stop-motion animation is a technique typically used to animate otherwise inanimate objects from LEGOs to drawings and it has been used to make movies such as The Nightmare Before Christmas, Wallace and Gromit: A Grand Day Out, Chicken Run, and Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Over the course of this 4-week class, we will not only learn how to use stop-motion techniques, but will also learn about broader topics like what makes a good story, good frame composition, and how to use colors effectively.

The only tools we will be using in this class to make animations are Blender, a camera, YouTube, and Pixlr Editor.

Blender – this is free but students will need to download it to their computers.
Camera – A smartphone will do fine. It just needs to be able to take a high volume of photos at a decent resolution and be able to transfer them to a computer.
YouTube – We will be uploading videos to YouTube to make it easier to share them. This will require having a Gmail account and creating a YouTube channel.
Pixlr.com – It’s a free web app. No download, no sign in.

Recommended age: 5th-12th grade

Each module will have a project for students to do and the best ones could win gift cards.
