Course Description

Anatomy and Physiology is a dynamic, year-long high school course that explores the structure and function of the human body. Students will investigate how cells, tissues, and organs work together within each system to maintain homeostasis and sustain life. Through engaging, interactive learning experiences, students will gain a deep appreciation for the complexity and marvel of the human body.

This asynchronous course is designed for flexibility while maintaining structure. Each week, students will receive teaching videos and weekly assignments (with due dates), allowing them to work at their own pace within the weekly schedule. Course material will be presented through high-quality instructional videos, hands-on activities, patient case studies, online simulations, and labs.

Additionally, students will engage in project-based learning, where they will apply their knowledge in creative, meaningful ways—whether by researching medical conditions, designing models, or analyzing real-world case studies. Whenever possible, students will connect what they learn to practical applications in healthcare, medicine, and everyday life.

Topics of Study:

Course Description

High school students will investigate 1- and 2-dimensional kinematics (the study of motion), 2-dimensional vectors, Newton’s laws, forces, gravity, fluids, work, energy, momentum, springs, waves, electricity, magnetism, and circuits in this year-long college-preparatory Physics course. They will come to appreciate the physics they use in their everyday lives.

Physics will be taught using various methods including engaging videos, hands-on activities and games, group discussions, individual projects, online simulations, and labs. Whenever possible, examples will be given so that students will understand how the topics they study are relevant to their lives.

Students should be prepared to complete weekly homework assignments (including hands-on and virtual labs) designed to aid them in understanding and practicing physics concepts. Since student success in the course depends on regular practice of the skills taught, a significant portion of the student’s final grade will be based on completing weekly homework assignments. (Note: homework is graded on completion, not based on correct or incorrect answers. While teacher feedback is given on student homework, points won’t be deducted for incorrect answers). Periodic graded tests will be given throughout the year to demonstrate mastery.

Because the course material will be taught using the instructor’s resources, no textbook purchase is required for this class. For students who learn best by reading, the free online Physics Classroom site provides a great supplement to the class.

Basic principles of an ecosystem, population dynamics, biomes, climate, the flow of energy through the biosphere, and sustainability will be discussed.

Weekly case studies will reinforce the topics discussed for the week and usually are accompanied by a lab.

The goal of this class is to expose students to areas of biology that they would not normally encounter in a high school classroom. Students could take 2 semesters or one semester, depending on their needs. There are already 12 possible units, with more planned. Students will have a lot of flexibility to choose modules and spend a few weeks or even a few months researching a topic and writing about it.

Students will be provided with some material to help them get started – a short lecture, links to sites explaining basics, articles, conflicting data, videos, or book suggestions. Some students may choose to read ‘hard science’ articles in primary journals, while others may choose a softer approach with articles from popular science magazines and sites. Instead of tests and quizzes, students write summaries, explore ethical implications, or address questions about the material. There is also a year-long project in which students write a short research proposal. Even if they don’t intend to continue in the sciences, most students find that this process helps them to understand how scientists work and why some question are so hard to answer. How do you ask a good question and break it into testable pieces? How do you get patients to participate? How do you judge if the experiment was successful?

On average, students will do 4 units per semester, with maybe a week or 2 of fill-in (there will be module that’s just ‘cool science stuff’ that they can pick and choose from when they have a leftover week or 2). But it will be flexible and students can do as few as 2 and as many as 6, depending on which modules they choose and how in-depth their research is.

Modules will include ‘allergy and immunity’, ‘cancer biology’, ‘prions and neurodegenerative disease’, ‘the microbiome’, ‘how to lie with statistics’, and ‘biological cycles and rhythms’. There are also suggestions for labs that students can buy and do for certain units, if they want to. Microbiology, for instance, lends itself to labs that one can purchase kits for.

There will be a required unit, ‘experimental design’ which students need in order to do their proposal (we talk about how to get participants to join the study, how to ask the right question, confounding effects, ethics, and why some questions are hard).

** This is a full year course that teaches the fundamentals of biology. Both semesters need to be completed to receive credit. If you only pay for Fall initially be sure to buy the Spring semester before that starts.**

This course will provide an introduction to biology. For most of the year, the focus is on molecular biology -biological molecules, parts of the cell, metabolic pathways, DNA replication, and the cell cycle. The unit on genetics is always a favorite, and the year concludes with units on ecology. If there is a need, additional optional modules will be added to address content requirements in other states. Other topics will include medical applications of biology and methods used to design experiments and collect and analyze data. While evolution will be covered, it is primarily discussed in one unit in the second semester.

In this class, the textbook is a useful resource that has much better drawings than the teacher’s, but it is not the primary source of material. Video lectures explain the ‘how’ and also the ‘why do we care?’. Biological molecules are related to dietary advice – students will know the difference between saturated and unsaturated fats and why one is solid at room temperature. DNA replication, chromatin structure, and transcription are important in understanding cancer biology – what has to go wrong for a tumor to form?

Although there are some traditional elements – homework questions, quizzes, and monthly tests – students are also able to be more creative (or not – it’s up to them) with projects for each unit and article reviews.

Labs
Most modules have at least one hands-on activity. Because the labs are intended to align with the course material, the number and type of activities vary to align with the content. There are three experiments that require lab reports and two others are ‘wet lab’ activities like DNA extraction that do not require lab reports. Other activities include simulating the processes of mitosis and DNA replication with office supplies and classifying local wildlife using a dichotomous key. Only one lab requires ordering specific chemicals. The others can be done using supplies that can be obtained at normal stores. The supplies for the course are listed in a document available at the start of the semester. There are also links to videos of the experiment being done, explanations of the experiment, and pooled class data as appropriate so that students who are unable to do the lab will still have access to the material
